LEH - THE ULTIMATE DESTINATION

Leh is a cold high desert in the Great Himalayas. It is capital of Ladakh in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a calm, quiet and attractive place with beautiful monasteries and ultimately beautiful natural terrain. Leh covers an area of approximately 45,110 sq. km. and is at a height of about 11,562 ft.

HOW TO REACH LEH
1. BY AIR: 
    Airport - Leh Kushok Bakula Rimpochee airport
                   Flights are available from Delhi to Leh - Jet airways, Indian airlines, Air India, Go air....
                   Duration of flight is 1 hour 10 minutes (approx).
2. BY RAIL:
    At present there is no railway connectivity of Leh with rest of the country.
    Two rail routes have been proposed.
    a. Srinagar - Kargil - Leh route
    b. Bilaspur- Mandi - Leh route
3. BY LAND:
     Leh has connectivity with India by two high altitude motorable roads.
     a. National Highway 1D
     b. Leh - Manali Highway

POINTS TO REMEMBER:

Best time to visit Leh - June to September

Mobile and Internet connectivity - 
a. Internet and email is available ONLY in Leh city
b. ONLY Aircel, BSNL and post paid Airtel works in Leh.
c. NO connectivity in Nubra valley, Pongyong lake, Changla and Khardungla pass.
d. Debit and credit cards do NOT work so carry cash.
e. ATM's are either out of order or heavily crowded.

Mountain Sickness - is common in Leh. Once in Leh just    relax and laze around, do not exert and let the body get acclimatized since the oxygen levels are quiet low. 
One may experience breathlessness, nausea,  headache etc. DO NOT PANIC rather....
a. drink lots of water, preferably warm (4-5 litres)
b. eat light food even though you may not be hungry.
c. Always keep and consume lots of chocolates, energy bars, dry fruits and chewing gum.
d. drink hot garlic soup and ginger water
e. Consult doctor in case you feel very unwell.



PERMISSION TO TRAVEL/PERMITS:
a. Indian tourists require NO permits
b. Foreign tourists require permits for visiting the inner-line areas.
c. Permit can be obtained from the D.C. office or registered travel agencies.
d. Timings for D.C. office - 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Sunday CLOSED.









THINGS TO CARRY:

a. Backpack and hand-bag/sling-bag.
b. Sunscreen lotion, moisturizer, lip balm, Vaseline.
c. Medical kit having pain reliever, inhaler, balm, vicks vaporub, camphor, insect repellent, antiseptic cream, ORS sachet, glucose, band aid, cotton roll, crepe bandage,volini spray, Vitamin C lozenges, small oxygen cylinder.
d. Footwear - comfortable waterproof shoes, woolen socks.
e. Clothes - comfortable clothes, jacket, sweater, pull over, muffler, shawl, raincoat.
f. Electronic items - mobile, camera, charger, torch (rechargable), memory card to capture the picturesque beauty of untouched and serene Leh and  Ladakh.
g. Accessories - hat/cap, anti glare sunglasses, sanitizer, old newspaper (01). 
h. NO plastic bags to be used as Leh and Ladakh are NO PLASTIC ZONE.

  7. It is an excellent blog. Ma'am, you have thrown light into some hidden Buddhist cultural treasures of our country. It is also interesting to note that there is a Hydroelectric Project existing in that area by the name'Nimo Bazo' about 40km from Leh. It is great that you have ventured the low oxygen area and captured the salient features in your camera. Wish you will venture into more unexplored areas like this.
